Methodology

Eckhart pursues a radical negative theology grounded in apophatic discourse: God as Godhead (Gottheit) transcends all predication, all being, all distinction. He synthesizes Neoplatonic emanation with Dominican Scholasticism, yet dismantles the very conceptual architecture he inherits. His method is paradoxical deconstruction—using technical Latin scholastic apparatus in sermons and treatises to guide the intellect beyond itself, toward Gelassenheit (releasement) and the 'breakthrough' where the soul realizes its ground (Grund) is identical with the divine ground. He reasons by negation and hyperbole: the soul must become 'virgin' and 'wife,' must annihilate selfhood to birth God within. Distinctions between creature and creator collapse in the spark (Funke) of uncreated intellect. His argumentation is circular by design, pushing language to self-erasure so lived contemplative union can emerge.

Sample argument

If you ask: when is a person in mere understanding? I answer: when he sees one thing separated from another. When is he above mere understanding? When he sees all in all, then he is above mere understanding. The just person seeks nothing with their works, for those who seek something or work for a why are servants and hirelings. Therefore if you would be conformed and transformed into justice, intend nothing in your works and form no why in your mind, neither in time nor in eternity, neither reward nor blessedness nor this nor that. For such works are truly dead. Indeed I say: as long as you do works for the sake of heaven or God or eternal bliss, from without, you are truly at fault. You may well be tolerated, but it is not the best. For if people think they will get more of God in inwardness, in devotion, in sweetness, in special grace than by the fireside or in the stable, you are acting just as if you took God and wrapped a cloak around his head and shoved him under a bench. Whoever seeks God in a special way gets the way and misses God, who lies hidden in it. But whoever seeks God without a special way gets him as he is in himself, and that person lives with the Son, and he is life itself.
